Diagnostic and Pharmacokinetic Research in Pediatric HIV/TB and Effects of Co-infection on the Central Nervous System (R01): -Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the National Institute of Mental Health NIMH), solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose improved modalities for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) infection and disease, including MDR and XDR TB, in children with HIV/TB co-infection. Applications are also invited for the evaluation of the pharmacokinetics of first- and second-line anti-tubercular medications, as well as pharmacokinetic drug interactions between these and antiretroviral medications in children with HIV/TB co-infection. Finally, applications are solicited for research to evaluate the effect of HIV/TB co-infection in children on the central nervous system. This FOA is intended to stimulate research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of HIV-infected children with tuberculosis (TB) co-infection, and to form a basis for future research and clinical care. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NICHD intends to commit $1.4 million, and NIMH intends to commit $500,000 in FY 2008 to support three to six meritorious applications. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
