Educational Programs for Population Research: - This announcement encourages applications for educational activities related to the NICHD mission to support research on the processes that determine population size, growth, composition, and distribution, and on the determinants and consequences, of population processes and the NIA mission to support research on the antecedents and impacts of changing social, demographic, economic, and health characteristics of the older population. It encourages activities designed to address three key objectives: enhancing the development of interdisciplinary scientists and facilitating interdisciplinary studies; improving the dissemination and use of existing data sets in population research; and advancing the adoption of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. - The use of this mechanism to support programs to engage students from non-population fields in population science is new in this revised announcement. Such programs would ideally target students specializing in fields that have high, but unrealized, potential for interdisciplinary collaborations with population scientists. Programs would expose participating students to the concepts of population research, the challenges and rewards of interdisciplinary work, and role models who are engaged in interdisciplinary research. They would be designed to reach new investigators before their career trajectories are set and to enhance their interest in and skills for future interdisciplinary research. - Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. Most awards are expected to have direct costs of $165,000 per year or less, and project periods not exceeding two years - This funding opportunity will use the NIH Education Project (R25) award mechanism. - An investigator may submit an application if his/her institution has any of the following characteristics: For-profit or non-profit organizations; public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories; units of State and local governments; eligible agencies of the Federal government; faith-based or community-based institutions; domestic or foreign institutions. - Any individual with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed program is invited to work with their institution to develop an application for support.
