Enhancing Access to Quality Information and Education in Genetics: The purpose of this cooperative agreement, Enhancing Access to Quality Information and Education in Genetics, is to enhance access to quality information, sharing of quality and vetted resources, peer-to-peer partnership, and organizational development resources. Consumers are critical to eliminating barriers in order to achieve parity in access and to increase the quality of care. Informed consumers and the public, including families, individuals and communities, must have genetic literacy in order to participate effectively in decision-making around the use of genetic services and any policy-making process. Enhancing Access to Quality Information and Education in Genetics, will build on established relationships and create new partnerships to construct, assemble, disseminate and translate information and resources on behalf of - and in some cases exclusively for - the consumer community, including underserved and underrepresented communities. The project will promote an interaction between a variety of stakeholders including genetics lay advocacy groups; state and federal agencies; healthcare and public health professionals; researchers; and the biomedical industry. The proposed activities will center on newborn screening and genetic services; knowledge and needs of consumers and families with genetic conditions; consumer perspectives regarding safety, and efficacy around laboratory testing and screening, and follow-up care; and bringing new tests to the public market. An initial focus with newborn screening programs is desired and proposed activities should include the establishment, expansion and or improvement of educational programs about genetics and newborn screening for parents, families and specific disease advocacy support groups.
