Environmental Capacity Building in the Newly Independent States: The purpose of this funding opportunity is to build upon EPA's previous efforts to improve environmental protection by building capacity in the environmental sectors of the governments of Newly Independent States (NIS). These countries are responsible for very large emissions of pollutants. These emissions cause significant environmental and human health risks and are frequently transported over long distances. The overall benefit of this project to the NIS countries will be the successful application of modern environmental policies, approaches and analytical techniques to practical environmental decision-making for more successful environmental protection and environmental risk reduction in their countries.
