Establishing the Precursors of the Metabolic Syndrome in Children: The goal of this initiative is to understand and identify the precursors of the metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents. The metabolic syndrome (also known as the dysmetabolic syndrome, syndrome X, or the insulin resistance syndrome) represents a clustering of metabolic disorders--central obesity, impaired fasting glucose, dyslipidemia and hypertension--that in adults predicts the development of type 2 diabetes and/or coronary artery disease. Research is needed to determine whether the precursors of the metabolic syndrome are different in children than in adults and whether there are unique pathophysiological factors operating in the pediatric population. Elucidating the precursors of the metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents may lead to new therapies to prevent the development of the metabolic syndrome or to mitigate the consequences of the metabolic syndrome later in life.
