Evaluation and Coordination of Pacific Lamprey in the Yakima River Basin: Bureau of Reclamation is working with YNFRMP to investigate potential effects of Reclamation facilities on adult and juvenile Pacific lamprey, and where appropriate, make recommendations for either further study or actions that may be taken to reduce effects on lamprey. The Nation has been a leader in identifying Pacific lamprey issues in the Yakima River Basin (Basin).

Agreement R15AC00044 was developed to provide financial assistance for this cause. One objective in this agreement is to evaluate potential effects to juvenile lamprey through entrainment into irrigation diversions. Surveys of irrigation canals in the Basin confirm that entrainment of larval/juvenile lamprey of various size classes does occur, particularly at Sunnyside, Wapato, and Roza diversions, and that a portion of these lamprey are Pacific lamprey (a large proportion are the more common Western brook lamprey). Juvenile entrainment is also a concern in the Umatilla River Basin.

In concert with the activities of the existing agreement, YNFRMP is proposing to explore techniques to reduce entrainment in canals in both basins. Salmonids are included in the proposal because the equipment to be installed under this project can also provide information from tagged salmonids in the basins.
