Exploratory Investigations in Food Allergy (R21): Purpose. The goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support high impact, innovative exploratory/developmental investigations to determine the mechanisms of IgE-mediated food allergy and related co-morbid conditions using ex vivo studies with human specimens and studies with current or new animal models of food allergy. This initiative is supported by co-sponsoring organizations including the Food Allergy Initiative and the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network. Application and submission requirements, and peer review processes will follow NIH guidelines. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. It is anticipated that $3 million per year will be available for this FOA from NIAID, the Food Allergy Initiative and the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network and that NIH will make 10-12 new awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
