Exploratory Studies in the Neurobiology of Pain in Sickle Cell Disease (R01): Purpose. This FOA issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to conduct basic and translational research into the neurobiology of pain in sickle cell disease. Applications that promote multidisciplinary collaboration are strongly encouraged. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NHLBI intends to commit up to $6.0 million (total costs) over four years and NINDS intends to commit up to $1.4 million (total costs) over four years.The NHLBI and NINDS anticipate that they will award up to $1.85 million in FY 2009 to fund four applications in response to this FOA.Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
