- Grant Description
- NOTE: This descriptive area provides an overview of this Program Area of Interest. YOU MUST READ THE MASTER FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT (FOA) FOR DETAILS ON ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, EVALUATION CRITERIA AND HOW TO PREPARE AN APPLICATION UNDER A SPECIFIC AREA OF INTEREST. THE MASTER FOA IS AVAILABLE AT THIS LINK: https://e-center.doe.gov/iips/faopor.nsf/8df825feb86675de852564650046faea/e840fe 496a431c78852573fe00633a96?OpenDocument Area of Interest 3: Fleet Evaluation and Factory Installation of Aerodynamic Heavy Duty Truck Trailers (DE-PS26-08NT01045-03) The objective of this area of interest is to solicit applications to accelerate the development, implementation, and commercialization of advanced aerodynamic trailers for heavy-duty trucks that substantially improve fuel economy and reduce petroleum consumption. These aerodynamic trailers are to be fully compliant with Federal safety standards, capable of being economically mass produced, and widely saleable commercially. Projects are to target the development, fleet evaluation, factory installation, and broad commercial availability of economically viable Class VII and VIII aerodynamic heavy-duty trailers and/or tractor/trailers. The primary focus is to develop trailers to achieve a 20% reduction in aerodynamic drag (leading to approximately a 10% improvement in fuel economy) compared to current, conventional trailers. An alternate option would be for proposing teams to present integrated aerodynamic solutions leading to a 15% improvement in fuel economy for the tractor/trailer combination. Work under either the primary focus or the alternate option is expected to help focus industry efforts to identify and downselect aerodynamic devices; conduct fleet evaluations to glean relevant real world data; and coalesce aerodynamic options into saleable, comprehensive system solutions providing an attractive rate of return for fleet customers.
