FY11 Militarily Relevant Peer Reviewed Alzheimer's Disease Research Program (MRPRA) Translational Research Award: The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, Defense Health Program Medical Research and Development Office is soliciting proposals for the FY11 Militarily Relevant Peer Reviewed Alzheimer's Disease Research Program (MRPRA) to be awarded during Calendar Year 2012. The Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) is administering the application process for this funding opportunity, and the United States Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA) is issuing this Program Announcement and will be negotiating all resulting awards. The mission of the MRPRA is to build an integrated program devoted towards understanding the association between Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and reducing the burden on those affected. Military personnel who suffer severe or moderate TBI face an increased risk for developing several long-term health problems. These conditions include Alzheimer's-like dementia, aggression, memory loss, depression, and symptoms similar to those of other neurological diseases. Even mild TBI may be associated with some of these adverse consequences. Therefore, the primary objective of the FY11 MRPRA is to facilitate the development of research tools and clinical outcomes that will permit the detection and diagnosis of neurological change found with TBI-associated AD. A second but equally important objective for the FY 11 MRPRA is the development of technologies intended to directly benefit individuals suffering from the symptoms of neurological impairment associated with either TBI or AD. Research falling under this second objective is intended to either increase or maintain the quality of life of those affected by either TBI or AD.The results of the research funded through this Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity are expected to generate research resources for professionals and practitioners in health, medical science and related fields related to the MRPRA's mission. The research impact is expected to benefit the military community, while meeting a public purpose for the benefit of the civilian community.
