Grant Description
TECHNICAL TOPIC 8 - Faculty/Student ExploratoryResearch Training Grants(DE-PS26-05NT42031-08)This topic centers on ?The Faculty/Student Exploratory Research TrainingGrant.? This is envisioned as an opportunity to maximize the participationofstudents and faculty among all of the qualifying institutions. Over thelongterm, all parties will benefit (HBCU/OMI and DOE) if the overall HBCU-OMIresearch infrastructure can be developed and maintained. If expandedbeyondthe typical research institution, science and engineering interests can beencouraged at an earlier stage of educational development, improvedresearchtraining can lead to better prepared graduate students entering the majoruniversities, primarily teaching faculty can continue to pursue limitedresearch interests, and a highly-qualified pool of potential employees maybedeveloped for the fossil fuels industry. These grants for research/ research training to be conducted over aone-yearperiod have a maximum value of $20,000. The proposed work can take theform ofa novel idea or concept to be tested at a preliminary stage, or the workcanaddress a small unique aspect of a larger problem, or the work can continueorexpand on previous work (e.g. sorbent formulations, catalyst conditions, etc.),or some other concept; but, the topic must fall within fossil energyresearchneeds (Technical Topics 1-7).Please note that applications under this Topic are only evaluated under twocriteria. The major goal of this Topic is to improve the researchinfrastructure of the HBCU/OMI. This Topic differs from Topics 1 through 7inthat the proposer must focus on not only the research, but must alsodemonstrate the enhancements to the research infrastructure that willaccrue tothe institution if they receive the award. The expected outcome of thisTopicis that many of the smaller institutions, to include Master?s Degreegrantinginstitutions and undergraduate degree granting institutions (primarilyteachinginstitutions), will find this opportunity to be more palatable/compatiblewiththe goals of their science and engineering Departments and professionalfaculty.ALL QUESTIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED THROUGH THE ?SUBMIT QUESTION?
