Female Health and Egg Quality (R01): -Purpose. This FOA solicits applications from institutions or organizations that propose to conduct basic and/or clinical research on the short- and long-term epigenetic and genetic impact of adverse female health situations such as poor nutrition, diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, aging, alcohol consumption, as well as the assisted reproductive technologies (ART), upon the quality of human eggs and preimplantation embryos prior to and around the time of fertilization. Short- and long-term outcomes in cells, tissues and organs of fetuses and offspring derived from these eggs and embryos are to be evaluated using the full range of available cell, molecular, physiological, proteomic, genomic, imaging and other approaches and technologies. It is expected that some projects will include behavioral studies on offspring derived from these eggs and embryos that may include perceptual and cognitive abilities, voluntary and involuntary neuromuscular functions, as well as anxiety and species-specific affective behaviors. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the numbers, quality and costs of the applications received.
