Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: This announcement solicits applications for the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders program. The purpose of this cooperative agreement is to educate health care providers (doctors, nurses, etc.) about the dangers of alcohol use during pregnancy and the need for appropriate alcohol screening and treatment to prevent Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). A significant gap in provider knowledge continues to exist and many providers still feel that it is safe for a woman to consume a small amount of alcohol during pregnancy, despite all studies which indicate that any alcohol usage during pregnancy places the child at risk. The applicant selected for this award will work with professional organizations to educate a broad range of health professionals about the dangers of alcohol usage during pregnancy and how to support the prevention of FASD. This process will be accomplished by the successful applicant developing and disseminating educational materials to providers.
