Field-Deployable Tools for Quantifying Exposures to Psychosocial Stress and to Addictive Substances for Studies of Health and Disease (U01): This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is part of an overall effort by NIH in establishing an Exposure Biology Program as part of a larger Gene and Environment Initiative, publicly announced in February, 2006. The Network on Exposure to Psychosocial Stress and Addictive Substances (NEPSAS) is defined as the final group of Awardees funded through this FOA. This FOA encourages the development, improvement and/or adaptation of measurement technologies which, by the end of the funding period, will be field-deployable tools that can detect and quantify personal exposure to psychosocial stress and/or addictive substances (licit and illicit) with maximum precision and reliability. Ideally, the technology could measure multiple addictive substances and psychosocial stress events, either singly or jointly, and be applied in large-scale population studies of how gene-environment interactions influence health and disease. The total amount of funding to be committed to this program is $8 million (total costs) over 4 years. Each year $2 million will be awarded.

Additional Information on Eligibility
Foreign institutions are eligible to apply. Eligible agencies of the Federal Government can apply. Faith-based or community-based organizations can apply. Milestones All applications must include a specific section labeled Milestones for each year. Milestones should be annual, well-described, quantitative, and scientifically justified and not simply a restatement of the specific aims. Rather, the milestones should offer a timeline and a pathway for the development of the proposed technology. These milestones will be used to judge the success of the proposed research on an individual-project basis. It is expected that the milestones will be adjusted annually at the award anniversary dates to incorporate the group's scientific accomplishments and progress and to reflect any recommendations of the Steering and Advisory Committees. Meetings The Exposure Biology Program investigators will be expected to attend Steering Committee meetings two times per year and participate in monthly conference calls to discuss their research progress. Funds to support travel of the key investigators to attend these meetings should be included in the application budget. Applicants may submit more than one application, provided each application is scientifically distinct
