Fish and Wildlife Coordination and Assistance Programs: The significance of turbidity in safeguarding Delta Smelt from predation: growth, development, behavior and predation. The proposed project is to conduct studies to evaluate the significance of turbidity in safeguarding Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) from predation. Specific objectives include: 1) evaluate Delta Smelt responses to predator cues at varying turbidities and thermal conditions as determined in prior studies, for 120dph individuals; 2) evaluate Delta Smelt growth and development under varying turbidities and thermal conditions, in the presence and absence of predator cues; and 3) quantify predation of Delta Smelt under varying turbidities and thermal conditions, as well as evaluate predator-prey behavioral responses (under low turbidities). Authorizing Legislation: Fish and Wildlife Act; Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act; Fish and Wildlife Improvement Act; and Endangered Species Act.
