Genetic Services-Grants to Support Comprehensive Medical Care for Cooleys Anemia/Thalassemia: The purpose of this grant activity is to fund up to three projects that will support the demonstration of a model system of comprehensive care and medical management for individuals and families at risk or affected by Cooley's Anemia/Thalassemia. Such model should involve a complex network of services ranging from screening, diagnosis, counseling, education, and psychosocial services to specialized medical care including regular red blood cell transfusions and the monitoring, prevention, and treatment of iron overload resulting from repeated transfusions. In addition, the issue of transitioning from pediatric to adult care should be addressed.
