Additional Information on Eligibility
Foreign institutions are eligible to apply. Only institutions in low- or middle-income ( developing ) countries are eligible to apply. Institutions in countries that have the least economic resources are particularly encouraged to apply. For the purposes of this announcement, a low- to middle-income country is defined as a country that has a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita below $10,000, according to the World Bank classification system (refer to the GNI per capita ranking in the left-hand column labeled Atlas Methodology at http://www.finfacts.com/biz10/globalworldincomepercapita.htm). (Do NOT refer to the right-hand column headed Purchasing Power Parity.) For the purposes of this announcement, institutions in the following countries or geographical regions are eligible: North Africa, West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa, Southern Africa, Russia, the Newly Independent States, Eastern Europe (except Slovenia), the Middle East (except Israel), India, Asia (except Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan), the Pacific Islands region (except Australia and New Zealand), Latin America and the Caribbean.
Grant Description
-Purpose. The purpose of this initiative is to provide funding opportunities for the increasing pool of foreign social and behavioral scientists, clinical investigators, nurses and other health professionals, with state-of-the-art knowledge of research methods. It is expected that this program will advance critical issues in global health through behavioral and social sciences research upon return of the investigators to their home countries. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The total amount to be awarded is $300,000 and the anticipated number of awards is six. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award may also vary; however, individual awards are limited to a maximum of $50,000 direct costs per year. The total amount to be awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the quality and costs of the applications received.
