Grant Description
The National Endowment for the Arts believes that a great nation deserves great art, and to fulfill this mission we continue to bring the best of the arts and culture to the American public. Through Great American Voices: Young Artists Performing Opera and Broadway Classics, the National Endowment for the Arts will bring professional performances featuring selections from popular opera and musical theater to military installations nationwide. Performances will be open and free of charge to military personnel and their families. Educational activities for both the adult audience and children of military personnel will be a part of each engagement. Grants will be awarded to professional opera companies and other organizations that have a demonstrated record of success in producing operatic works for touring. This initiative will support performances and educational activities at approximately 20 military installations throughout the United States. Military bases will be selected by the Arts Endowment in cooperation with the Department of Defense. A selected organization can expect to be paired with a military base within a 200 mile radius of its home location, with the hope that future partnerships and new audiences may develop as a result. An Arts Endowment cooperator will work with grantees and military bases to schedule and coordinate the logistics of the performances. An organization is limited to one application for this initiative. However, an organization may propose to visit more than one military base in its single application. Activities must include: At least one performance on a military base, free of charge to the base and to the audience. Performances should be approximately 90 minutes in duration and comprise excerpts from larger works. They should be designed for four to six performers to allow for a variety of arias and ensembles. Companies may be asked to perform in unconventional venues and will need to be flexible in their technical requirements. Complicated production elements are not recommended, but some use of costumes and props is appropriate. See the minimum technical resources that the military bases will provide. Printed programs for distribution to the audience. Each program should include a list of the works to be performed, brief synopses of the works, and translations of any foreign language selections as well as information about the performers, directors, and composers. At least one related educational activity in a school or other facility that serves the children of military personnel. Organizations will be required to provide material to support these educational activities. At least one adult enrichment activity, such as a presentation about the performance or a discussion between performers and the audience, before or after the performance. Repertoire for the performances must include selections from popular operas and musical theater. The proposed program should have a unifying theme that elevates it above a simple string of arias and ensembles. Approximately two thirds of each performance should comprise selections from opera and one third selections from musical theater. At a minimum, one American work should be included. At least half of the repertoire performed must be from works on the list provided in the full announcement.
