HOPE Crew Project at National Capital Parks-East: Six youth interns will be able to obtain experience in pruning, planting, vegetation management, historic preservation, and species identification in a hands-on preservation experience. Youth will learn about the critical intersection between facilities maintenance, historic preservation, and natural resource management through cultural landscape management. This youth program will result in the improved condition of historic structures and cultural landscapes within Facility Management Software System (FMSS). During a Cultural Landscape FMSS crosswalk conducted during the summer of 2017 by WASO, NCR, and the park, deferred vegetation management and pruning was cited as a major deficiency for these critical cultural resources. This youth effort will allow the park to make headway on correcting these deficiencies, while also allowing park staff to make a meaningful connection between the sites and youth.
