Implementation Research for the Management of Malaria and Childhood Illness in Rural Areas of the United Republic of Tanzania (U01): In addition this FOA addresses the specific goals of the CDC Malaria Branch to accomplish the following: (1) address the optimal mix of currently validated malaria-control interventions across transmission zones and epidemiological and cultural settings; (2) rapidly develop and validate the impact of revised, enhanced or novel interventions that will contribute to effective malaria control at scale; and (3) establish the most feasible opportunities for integration with other U.S. Government-supported child-survival, environmental-health, vector-control, and infectious-disease programs.

- Eligible Institutions You may submit an application(s) if your organization has any of the following characteristics: HHS/CDC will only provide assistance to the Ifakara Health Research and Development Centre (IHRDC) in Ifakara and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The Ifakara Health Research and Development Centre, Tanzania, is the single, sub-Saharan African institution with the combination of specific expertise and experience that meets the requirements for this award. IHRDC is uniquely qualified for this award based on the following experience and capabilities: . IHRDC has already conducted a large-scale evaluation of the effectiveness of ACT for malaria, and engaged in research on the optimum approaches for confronting malaria and childhood pneumonia with support from HHS/CDC; . IHRDC and HHS/CDC have collaborated on at least five of the major malaria research consortia supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; . IHRDC is the only health research institution in sub-Saharan Africa, with the appropriate capacity in biomedical, socio-behavioral, and health economic research; . IHRDC is located in an area of very intense malaria transmission, in a country that has adopted a national malaria treatment policy of ACT, where the Presidents Malaria Initiative is actively engaged, and where HHS/CDC and HHS/NIH leave an established research presence...
