- Grant Description
- . This purpose of this announcement is to implement a protocol for early age population identification of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Developmental Disabilities (DD). The methodology and surveillance system would be tailored to early identification (under the age of four years). Funds are to be utilized to implement the methodology for determining the population-based prevalence of ASD for early childhood surveillance based on the protocols developed under CDC Announcement DD06-001. The proposed activities and catchment area will be domestic (no international activities may be proposed). Determination of the prevalence of ASD means identifying and verifying the optimal number of potential cases of ASD in a defined population of individuals. Epidemiological surveillance is the ongoing systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health practice, closely integrated with the timely dissemination of these data to those who need to know. A surveillance system includes a functional capacity for data collection, analysis, and dissemination linked to public health programs.
