- Grant Description
- The purpose of the program is establish and implement a system to detect, prevent and control seasonal influenza, highly pathogenic avian influenza, pandemic influenza and other infectious respiratory diseases among refugee populations in Tanzania by accomplishing the following: 1) establishing surveillance for acute respiratory disease in refugee camps in the United Republic of Tanzania; 2) establishing laboratory diagnostic testing for influenza, including highly pathogenic avian influenza and other respiratory pathogens to determine the etiology(ies) of acute respiratory disease in these refugees; and 3) implementing preparedness, prevention and control measures in coordination with Government agencies, non-governmental organizations and other organizations that are providing health care in the refugee camps. These collaborative activities can support the implementation of public-health activities to control and prevent infectious diseases in U.S.-bound refugee populations.
