Grant Description
The NCIRD Influenza Division (ID) is seeking cooperative agreements with organizations working in the southern hemisphere to conduct research studies on the disease burden, epidemiology, transmission, risk factors for severe illness, effectiveness of vaccination, and effectiveness of other prevention strategies for influenza and other respiratory diseases of public health importance. Countries in the southern hemisphere are likely to have a seasonality of influenza during the northern hemisphere summer, and compared with countries in the northern hemisphere, also may have different seasonality of other respiratory diseases. Therefore these countries can provide critical information on the epidemiology, burden, strains and effectiveness of prevention measures of influenza and other respiratory pathogens at a time when study sites in the northern hemisphere cannot. The recent influenza pandemic strain emerged in 2009 just before the southern hemisphere influenza season and highlighted the importance of having established systems in the southern hemisphere able to collect high quality critical data on virus impact and transmission of influenza and information on other respiratory diseases.
