Laboratory Accreditation Standards Development and Technical Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is offering financial assistance to technically qualified, eligible organizations (i.e., nonprofit and universities) interested in the development of a national environmental laboratory accreditation system through the development of voluntary consensus standards and technical assistance. For approximately nine years, a joint federal, state, and private sector effort has been underway to establish a uniform national environmental laboratory accreditation program. Accreditation is defined here as the process by which a governmental body or organization evaluates and recognizes a laboratory as meeting certain predetermined qualifications or standards.
