Landmarks of American Culture and History: Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia: As part of its We the People initiative, and in partnership with the Pew Charitable Trusts, NEH seeks proposals for two one-week residence-based workshops for K-12 educators that would bring two groups of 50 school teachers drawn from schools from throughout the United States to Philadelphia for intensive study of the life of Benjamin Franklin--civic leader, publisher, inventor, and citizen of Philadelphia--with a particular focus on his contributions to American government and civic life. The goals of the workshops are to: * increase knowledge of Franklin's civic and political life, writings, and achievements, with a particular emphasis on how his experiences influenced his opinions at the time of the country's founding and how he influenced the development of our nation; * enhance the opportunities that K-12 teachers have to learn about a key moment in the founding of the American political system; * provide teachers with training and experience in the use and interpretation of historical sites in Philadelphia and their material resources and archival evidence of American history and culture. Workshops should be held at or near sites important to the history of Franklin in Philadelphia such as Independence Hall, the Library Company of Pennsylvania, and the American Philosophical Society, as well as other important sites in and around Philadelphia. Applicants should explain the historical significance of each proposed site and its relationship to Benjamin Franklin, identify the documents and material resources available for use, and the describe ways the sites will enhance the workshop.
