Marsh Sandwort Propagation and Outplanting at Golden Gate National Recreation Area: In cooperation with the FWS, the University of California Santa Cruz will conduct the study entitled, Marsh Sandwort (Arenaria paludicola) propagation and outplanting at Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The project purpose is to establish a population of the critically endangered Arenaria paludicola at a site near the historical population in San Francisco, California and obtain data to determine the best strategy to introduce this species to suitable sites throughout its historical range. This project will include the harvesting of up to 2,500 Arenaria paludicola plants that are currently growing at a facility in Los Osos, California; transporting them to propagation facilities; reintroducing them to sites within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in the greater San Francisco area, which is the type locality for Arenaria paludicola; collecting data on the success of transplanted propagules; and maintaining some propagules (up to 500) at multiple sites during the duration of the project to augment introduced plant sites as necessary to increase the chances for this project to establish viable, self-sustaining population.
