- NOTE: This is an overview of the Funding Opportunity Announcement. You must read the entire Funding Opportunity Master Announcement (attached below) for additional information, evaluation criteria and application preparation instructions. Additionally, please note that this funding opportunity contains four areas of interest. Applications can not be submitted directly under this master announcement but must be submitted under the area of interest which best fits the majority of the effort to be performed. The areas of interest to which applications can be submitted are listed below. The objective of this announcement is to develop technology options that will enable the current fleet of coal-fired power plants to cost effectively comply with the new Clean Air Mercury Rule. This announcement is requesting applications to develop mercury control technologies in four different areas of interest. Area of Interest 1 is for Phase III field testing of advanced post-combustion mercury control technologies capable of achieving 90% or greater mercury removal. Area of Interest 2 is for additional (Round 3) Phase II field testing of advanced post-combustion mercury control technologies in specific areas of need capable of achieving 50-70% mercury removal. Area of Interest 3 is for novel combustion and post-combustion mercury control technologies capable of achieving at least 70% mercury removal. Area of Interest 4 is for novel pre-combustion mercury control technologies capable of achieving at least a 50% reduction in mercury. Areas of Interest 1 and 2 require longer-term field testing (two to six months at optimum process conditions) with the goal to reduce costs to 50% or less of the baseline cost. Area of Interest 3 allows for bench through pilot-scale testing with the goal to reduce costs to 25% or less of the baseline cost. Area of Interest 4 allows for bench through pilot-scale testing with the goal to reduce costs to 50% or less of the baseline cost. The baseline cost estimate is $60,000/lb of mercury removed.
