Master Cooperative Agreement - JACL: The objective of this agreement is to identify Japanese American youth as among the next generation of conservation stewards by connecting them to a NPS historic sites that has significance to Japanese Americans and Japanese American history. The program aims to address the search for personal identity experienced by many young Japanese Americans who seek greater affirmation and understanding about their historical and cultural experience. The program will encourage participants to consider careers in public service, preservation, and historical fields. Through these activities participants will have a chance to physically identify with the incarceration experience will provide opportunities to understand the historic origins of the Japanese American community, as well as its continued vibrancy and current initiatives. Educational sessions prior to and throughout the program will explore and analyze the causes for the internment as well as its racial, political, and civil rights implications and its continued impact on the Japanese American community; and it will emphasize the ways in which the legacy of the incarceration remains relevant in the current age.
