Additional Information on Eligibility: Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
Grant Description: Purpose. This FOA encourages Exploratory/Developmental Research Project Grant (R21) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to (1) study biological, neurobiological, psychosocial, and clinical mechanisms and processes by which aging and/or age-related diseases affect the experience of pain, (2) examine biological, neurobiological, psychosocial, and clinical factors that impact pain experience and prevalence in older people, (3) evaluate existing pain assessment and/or management approaches in older adults, or (4) develop new assessment methods and/or management strategies for pain with particular attention to the needs of older adults. Studies involving animal models or human subjects are appropriate under this program announcement. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with FOAs of identical scientific scope, PA-09-193, that encourages applications under the R01 Research Grant mechanism, and PA-09-195, that encourages applications under the R03 Small Research Grant mechanism.. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism, numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
