Mechanisms and Management of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Complications of HIV/AIDS (R01): -Purpose: The purpose of this FOA is to foster collaborative research to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of metabolic and anthropometric abnormalities seen in HIV infection and highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and their relationship to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk; to evaluate novel and existing biomarkers and imaging modalities in the assessment of coronary artery disease and risk in HIV patients; and to identify treatment strategies and interventional approaches to reduce cardiovascular risk while optimizing the medical management of HIV infection. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NHLBI intends to commit $8 million in FY2008 to fund approximately 8 applications for up to 5 years for each application (1 Data Coordinating Center and 6-7 Clinical Research Sites) submitted in response to this FOA. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
