Medical Countermeasures to Restore Gastrointestinal Function after Radiation Exposure: Project Bioshield (RC1): -Purpose. The goal of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to accelerate the development of safe and effective medical products to prevent, mitigate and treat the gastrointestinal injury and to restore gastrointestinal function after radiation exposure from radiological and nuclear terrorist attacks. Specifically, this new initiative will support research and development of the most promising new approaches and medical products to minimize damage and restore normal gastrointestinal function after radiation exposure. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Challenge Grant (RC1) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. In FY 2007, the total amount to be awarded under this FOA is expected to be $4 million to support 4-6 new awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
