Methane Hydrates: The intent of this Department of Energy (DOE), National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) funding opportunity announcement is to select projects in FY06 that will support ongoing efforts aimed at development of improved understanding of the potential of methane hydrates as a future energy source, the produceability of naturally occurring methane hydrate formations and their roles in the natural environment. The primary goal of the effort is to contribute to an overall program goal of assessing the extent and potential commercial viability of the methane hydrate resource base by 2010. The desire is to add one or more projects to the current portfolio that will result in improved tools, methods, and information relative to the regional appraisal, detection, and characterization of methane hydrates, as well as field and lab studies on the role of hydrates within the global environment.
