Mexico Correctional Training Capacity Enhancement: The INL Corrections program assists the Government of Mexico (GOM) in improving its federal and state prison systems by enhancing the professionalism of their staff, and by providing them with effective tools and methodologies needed to operate safe, secure and humane penitentiaries, and limit criminal activities within Mexican prisons. The Corrections program encourages proof of compliance through accreditation by the American Correctional Association (ACA) utilizing international standards. It also provides technical assistance in the development of prison industry programs to enhance inmate reinsertion opportunities.

INL Mexico is currently supporting the GOM in extending corrections officer training to the states. Training under this program reaches all levels of operations, including wardens, administrators, supervisory staff, corrections officers, support personnel, and special units, such as prisoner transportation. The INL Corrections program partners, with federal and state agencies in the United States to provide training. Hands–on operational training is given at appropriate locations in the United States and Mexico, with a focus on train-the-trainer programs, to provide a sustainable training program for the GOM. INL also provides programs and support to Mexico’s National Corrections Academy in Xalapa, Veracruz.
