Mussel Studies at St. Croix Scenic Riverway and Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.: The Recipient is a member of the Great Lakes-Northern Forest CESU who was awarded a Master Cooperative Agreement P12AC31164 allowing the University of Minnesota to participate in specific tasks, and can provide the necessary activities involved in this particular task while providing an effective outcome for NPS and the objectives of this research/educational project. The primary objective of this agreement is for the Cooperator to inventory and detect zebra and quagga mussels to determine their status, distribution and impacts to the parks natural resources at both St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and Apostle Islands National Lakeshore . Both parks will work closely with the Cooperator in designing and implementing this study with. The parks will also train student intern and/or research assistants on necessary research and park protocols and mentor them. Dr. McCartney at the University of Minnesota is an expert zebra and quagga mussel researcher and knows the sites to be studied. He is well positioned to know of interested and highly qualified students from his own program as well as Fisheries, Water Resources, and others. The recipient has previous created or has had substantial involvement in several projects on the St. Croix leading classes of students through exercises and projects on behalf of the Park.
