Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 Federal Appropriation specifically directs CDC to award funds to: American Red Cross, San Juan Puerto Rico
Grant Description
Funding will go towards a research test for Dengue Virus on all Red Cross blood donations in Puerto Rico. The American Red Cross collects and distributes approximately 77,000 whole blood collections each year from its Regional Blood Center in Puerto Rico, which represents about half the blood supply to hospitals. Dengue virus is endemic in Puerto Rico with seasonal epidemics occurring during the wet season (July -December). The purpose of the study will be to remove infected units from the blood supply, assess the risk of Dengue transmission by transfusion, and gather data that might be used to encourage a manufacturer to license a Dengue test in the future.
