Grant Description
American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius is a major initiative to acquaint Americans with the best of their cultural and artistic legacy. Through American Masterpieces, the National Endowment for the Arts will sponsor performances, exhibitions, tours, and educational programs across all art forms that will reach large and small communities in all 50 states. This component of American Masterpieces will celebrate the collaborative genius, evolution, diversity, and cultural contribution of the American musical theater. Through this component, musical theater work of the highest quality -- that otherwise would not be available -- will be experienced by Americans in communities across the nation. Grants will be awarded in two areas for: Home-based or touring performances of masterworks. Up to ten organizations will be selected to present musical theater work in their home locations or touring venues. The tour of a masterwork to college and university presenters. The Arts Endowment anticipates that a single organization will be selected to tour a musical theater work of excellence and significance to three to five college and university presenting houses. This tour is intended to bring a masterwork to areas where high quality musical theater is otherwise unavailable. Special consideration will be given to engagements in communities that traditionally do not have access to professional musical theater. The Arts Endowment's support will be directed to costs associated with touring including production design, artists' fees, and travel. It is anticipated that Arts Endowment funds will allow the touring organization to reduce its fee to presenters.
