- Organizations applying to participate must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or a division of state, local, or tribal government. Eligible applicants include such organizations as literary centers, libraries, museums, colleges and universities, art centers, historical societies, arts councils, tribal governments, humanities councils, literary festivals, and arts organizations. Applicant organizations must partner with a library (if the applicant organization itself is not a library). K-12 schools and school districts, whether public or private, are ineligible to apply but are encouraged to participate as partners. Note: Applications from intermediary or umbrella organizations with general or vague plans lacking local impact will not be competitive.

- The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services designedto revitalize the role of literature in American popular culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of itscitizens. Created by the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest, The Big Read brings together partners across thecountry to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment.
