NHLBI Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral MD/PhD Fellows (F30): The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is interested in supporting individual predoctoral fellowships for combined MD/PhD training in research areas relevant to the mission of the NHLBI. The NHLBI mission is to provide leadership for national programs in diseases of the heart, blood vessels, lung, and blood; blood resources; and sleep disorders. The NHLBI supports research training and career development of new and established researchers in fundamental sciences and clinical disciplines to enable them to conduct basic and clinical research related to heart, vascular, lung, and blood diseases; sleep disorders; and blood resources through individual and institutional research training awards and career development awards. Potential applicants may be interested in viewing the NHLBI Strategic Plan located at http://apps.nhlbi.nih.gov/strategicplan. The strategic plan is intended to provide the NHLBI with a guide for its research and training programs over the next 5 to 10 years. Among the areas of emphasis, but not limited to, in research training are Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Systems Biology or Network Biology, and Interdisciplinary Research. Applications to the program will be accepted from (a) students currently enrolled in a combined MD/PhD program and (b) current medical or graduate students seeking admission to a combined program that provides research training in areas relevant to the NHLBI mission. Awards to these applicants are contingent on subsequently being enrolled in a combined MD/PhD program. The amount of the award will be determined by the Ruth L. Kirschstein-National Research Service Award (Kirschstein-NRSA) predoctoral award guidelines. The number of awards will depend upon the quality of the applications received, available funds, and programmatic priorities. This Program Announcement uses the Individual Kirschstein-NRSA F30 award mechanism. Eligible organizations include domestic institutions/organizations; for-profit or non-profit organizations; public or private institutions such as universities, colleges, hospital, and laboratories; and eligible agencies of the Federal government including NIH intramural laboratories. Candidates for the Kirschstein-NRSA F30 award must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States, or must have been lawfully admitted to the United States for Permanent Residence. Non-citizen nationals are generally persons born in outlying possessions of the United States, i.e., American Samoa and Swains Island. Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible. Individuals may apply for the F30 in advance of admission to the United States as a Permanent Resident recognizing that no award will be made until legal verification of Permanent Resident status is provided. Applicants submitting revised applications must follow the instructions for revised applications in the PHS 416-1 (Rev.10/2005). Up to two revised applications may be submitted.

Additional Information on Eligibility
Foreign institutions are not eligible to apply. Eligible agencies of the Federal Government can apply. The sponsoring institution must have staff and facilities available on site to provide a suitable environment for performing high-quality research training. The PhD phase of the program may be conducted outside the sponsoring institution, e.g. a Federal laboratory including the NIH intramural laboratories. This training, however, must be part of a combined MD/PhD program. Foreign Institutions are not eligible to apply.
