NIAID Partnerships with Public-Private Partnerships (U01): -This initiative will support collaborative relationships between the NIAID and established product development Public-Private Partnerships (PD PPPs) in order to accelerate preclinical research and development of promising new preventive, therapeutic, or diagnostic tools that target high priority neglected infectious diseases of global importance for which commercial markets currently provide insufficient incentive for corporate investment. -NIAID will enter into milestone-driven cooperative agreements with PD PPPs to support projects on various aspects of preclinical development (e.g., target validation, process development, formulation, toxicology, etc.) -The FY 2007 total anticipated amount to be awarded is $3 million. -The anticipated duration of award is up to 5 years. -The anticipated number of awards is 3-4. -Mechanism: U01 single project cooperative agreement

- Foreign institutions are eligible to apply. Faith-based or community-based organizations can apply. Applicants may submit more than one application, but each application must be scientifically distinct, as follows; For therapeutics, each application must be focused on a different chemical class For vaccines, each application must be focused on different immunological targets For diagnostics, each application must be focused on different detection strategies PPPs based in the U.S. should be registered as 501(c)(3) organizations, or must provide documentation of incorporation as a non-profit public entity that has established collaborations with the private sector. PPPs based outside of the US should provide comparable documentation of incorporation as a non-profit public entity that has established collaborations with the private sector. If such documentation is not in English, then a translation of the documents into English must be provided. Eligible PPPs must be dedicated to the discovery and/or development of new drugs, vaccines, diagnostics, or other health products addressing neglected infectious diseases that are prevalent in low income countries (the lower 50% of countries rated by poverty level according to the 2006 World Development Report, found at http://publications.worldbank.org/ecommerce/catalog/product?item_id=4849133 ). Representative examples include those PPPs listed on the database of the Initiative on Public-Private Partnerships for Health (found at http://www.ippph.org ). NOTE: Applications from applicants that do not meet the eligibility criteria will be returned without review.
