NIBIB Quantum Projects: Exploratory Phase I (R01): -Purpose. The goal of the Quantum Program is to develop innovative biomedical technologies with the potential for a profound (quantum) impact on the detection, prevention, diagnosis or treatment of a major disease or public health problem, compared with present-day approaches. This announcement for a three-year Phase I award will support pilot studies to establish the feasibility to thereafter achieve a clinically applicable technology within 8-10 years of the Phase I award. The modifications in this reissued RFA consist of a greater emphasis on the magnitude of the targeted healthcare impacts, a new funding mechanism, expanded review and responsiveness criteria, requirement for electronic submission, allowance for applications from multiple-PIs, and different agency contacts. -Mechanism of Support. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the R01 grant mechanism for Phase I awards. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NIBIB anticipates commitment of up to $5,000,000 in FY2007 for this program, and that five to seven awards will be made. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the receipt of a sufficient number of meritorious applications
