Grant Description
Purpose: The goal of NIH-supported career development programs is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists is available in adequate numbers and in appropriate research areas to address the Nations biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages applications for institutional research career development (K12) programs that propose to support intensive supervised research training and career development experiences for clinician scientists (scholars) leading to research independence in the area of drug abuse and addiction. Candidates selected for support as scholars must hold a clinical or research doctorate and can commit a minimum of 9 person-months (equivalent to 75% of full-time professional effort) conducting clinical research and career development activities associated with the proposed program. Mechanism of Support: This FOA will use the NIH Institutional Research Career Development K12 grant mechanism. K12 programs may not be transferred from one institution to another. (See section VI.2.) Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards: Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
