- Grant Description
- The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the research, development, and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and a component of the Office of Justice Programs (OJP). NIJ provides objective, independent, evidence-based knowledge and tools to enhance the administration of justice and public safety. NIJ solicits proposals to inform its search for the knowledge and tools to guide policy and practice. NIJ seeks qualified applicants to establish and operate five criminal justice Technology Centers of Excellence in the areas of communications technologies; forensic technologies; information and geospatial technologies; sensors, surveillance, and biometric technologies; and weapons and protective systems technologies. As part of the NLECTC System, these Centers of Excellence will-with respect to their specific technology areas-support the NIJ research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) process by providing scientific and technical support to NIJs research and development efforts; supporting the demonstration, transfer, and adoption of appropriate technology into practice by law enforcement and corrections agencies, courts, and public crime laboratories; assisting in the development and dissemination of technology guidelines and standards; and providing technology assistance, information, and support to law enforcement and other appropriate criminal justice agencies. NIJ anticipates that establishment of these Technology Centers of Excellence within the existing NLECTC System will further the mission of NIJ by better aligning the NLECTC System with NIJ's RDT&E activities, enhancing cost-effectiveness, and better serving the needs of State and local criminal justice practitioners. NIJs constituency includes more than 19,000 law enforcement agencies, 4,500 corrections agencies, and 350 public crime laboratories throughout the United States and its territories.
