Grant Description
The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the research, development, and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice and a component of the Office of Justice Programs (OJP). NIJ provides objective, independent, evidence-based knowledge and tools to enhance the administration of justice and public safety. NIJ solicits proposals to inform its search for the knowledge and tools to guide policy and practice. NIJ is seeking applications for funding new or improved less lethal technology devices that will minimize the risk of death and injury to public safety officers, suspects, detainees, and the public. Such devices are designed for use by law enforcement and corrections officers when: . Lethal force is not appropriate. . Lethal force is justified, but lesser force may be effective. . Lethal force is justified, but its use could cause injury to bystanders or damage toproperty or the environment.Such devices may achieve the desired effect by temporarily incapacitating, confusing, or delaying an individual.
