Grant Description
The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the research, development, and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice and a component of the Office of Justice Programs (OJP). NIJ provides objective, independent, evidence-based knowledge and tools to enhance the administration of justice and public safety. NIJ solicits proposals to inform its search for the knowledge and tools to guide policy and practice. With this solicitation, NIJ seeks proposals for research and development to enhance forensic crime scene examinations. This solicitation focuses on: . Small, rugged, less costly, and less labor-intensive non-destructive analytical tools and technologies for the onsite presumptive and/or confirmatory analysis of forensic evidence at a crime scene. . Sample location, identification, capture, and stabilization technology suitable for recovery of trace particulate, liquid, chemical, and biological evidence at a crime scene. . Improving basic and fundamental understanding of chemical and/or biological signatures found at crime scenes. Forensic crime scene evidence typically consists of, but is not limited to: latent prints, blood splatter, blood, semen, hairs, fibers, gun shot residue, explosive residue, fire debris, and impression evidence. Note: Proposals related to the analysis of biological evidence for DNA or portable digital technology forensics should apply under NIJs Forensic DNA Research and Development solicitation or NIJs Electronic Crime and Digital Evidence Recovery solicitation. In addition, NIJ has separate solicitations in fiscal year 2007 for research and development on impression evidence and on fire and arson investigation.
