Grant Description
The United States Fire Administration (USFA) has supported fellowships to senior fire executives since 1984, known as The Harvard Fellowship Program. Each fellowship enables a senior fire executive to attend and participate in the three-week "Senior Executives in State & Local Government Program" course that is held twice each year at the Kennedy School of Government-Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This program is unique and offers a superior professional development experience for fire service authorities who have demonstrated significant leadership accomplishment with even further potential. Additionally, these fellowships guarantee that the fire and emergency service sector will be represented in this much esteemed venue where public policy and governance are discussed and shaped. For the last five years, three additional organizations have formed a partnership with DHS/U.S. Fire Administration to fund eight fellowships. The other organizations are the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), The International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Along with USFA, each of these organizations sponsors and funds two fellows. Each organization participates in the selection process, and the eight selections (senior fire executive participants) are drawn from the total applicant pool.
