Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Grants: The National Park Services (NPS) National NAGPRA Program invites proposals for FY2008 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) grants. NAGPRA is a Federal law passed in 1990 that provides a process for museums and Federal agencies to return certain Native American cultural items -- human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony -- to lineal descendants, culturally affiliated Indian tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations. The National NAGPRA Program administers grants that can assist Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages and corporations, Native Hawaiian organizations, and museums in carrying out projects associated with NAGPRA compliance. Two types of grants are available. Consultation/Documentation grants may fund activities such as: Travel to museums to view collections and consult on NAGPRA items; Training for tribal representatives in the fundamentals of NAGPRA; Inter-tribal collaboration to determine policies for treatment and disposition of NAGPRA items. Amounts Available: $5000-$75,000. Repatriation grants may include expenses such as: Transportation costs associated with transferring possession of NAGPRA items from a museum or agency to a tribe; Costs associated with reburial of Native American human remains and cultural items. Amounts Available: Any amount up to $15,000. Eligibility: Federally recognized Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages and corporations, Native Hawaiian organizations, and museums may apply. Museums may include state or local government agencies, private institutions, and institutions of higher learning that have received federal funds. Deadlines: Consultation/Documentation grants are due on March 3. Repatriation grants are accepted from October 1 to June 30.
