- Grant Description
- The New Play Development Project is an Arts Endowment initiative to advance the American nonprofit theaters ability to provide meaningful support for new work. This project will provide support to theater institutions for the development of new plays of substantial merit. Providing opportunities for audience engagement throughout a plays path of development will be an important component of these projects. This initiative also will identify, organize, and disseminate widely in the theater field information on effective collaborative models for the sustained development of outstanding new American plays. The purpose of this Program Solicitation is to select an organization (Cooperator) to administer the New Play Development Project. This initiative has several components: 1)Stimulating dialogue and information sharing within the field on best practices, innovative approaches, and models related to new play development. 2)Providing support for specific play development activities that can serve as models for the field and heighten interest among the American public in the play development process. The Arts Endowment is particularly interested in projects that involve multiple partners and venues and that engage audiences in innovative ways with work of the highest artistic quality. The Cooperator will support: --Five Development projects for workshop development of unproduced new plays that have a strong potential for achieving subsequent full production. --Two Production projects for more substantial assistance for plays at more advanced stages of development. Each project would involve multiple stages of development and at least one full production. 3)Examining the methods and practices used in the supported model projects and sharing these findings with the theater field and others interested in supporting and encouraging new work. The Cooperator will work closely with the NEA Project Director on all phases of this project.
