Non-injection Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS (R01): -Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institutes of Health (NIH), encourages drug abuse research that elucidates the contribution of non-injection drug abuse to the acquisition and/or transmission and/or disease progression of HIV/AIDS. Specifically, it seeks to: 1) investigate how, where, why, and among whom HIV/AIDS is spreading through non-injection drug use associated high-risk sexual behavior; 2) develop effective prevention and treatment interventions for non-injection drug users at risk for or infected with HIV; and 3) improve accessibility and utilization of evidence-based, integrated care for non-injection drug abuse, risky sexual behavior, and HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Although both the NIDA and the NIMH are participating in this FOA, only the NIDA has set aside funds specifically for this program. The estimated amount of funds available for support of 3-7 projects awarded as a result of this FOA is $3,000,000 for fiscal year 2007. Future year amounts will depend on annual appropriations.
