Notice of Intent: Cyclic Maintenance on Keys Ranch Structures: (1) Multiple structures at the Keys Ranch are in need of cyclic maintenance. These structures were listed as contributing to the National Register Historic District for the property. Cyclic maintenance is needed to stabilize the Girlâ¿¿s Outhouse, the Tack House, the Chicken Coop/Dog House, the Hen House, the Guest House, the South School House, and the large Arrastra. These structures have been impacted by previously intermittent treatment and by natural weathering.
(2)
(3) Keys Ranch is considered the premiere cultural resource attraction of Joshua Tree National Park. It is only available for viewing by tour; tours regularly sell out over a month in advance. Interest in the ranch and demand for the experience it provides are therefore quantifiably high. The park now conducts cyclic maintenance at this site on an annual basis, but is faced with more work than can be accomplished by park staff. This project will address numerous deficiencies that detract from visitor experience and threaten the integrity of the structures. Public benefit can be seen in two major outcomes: 1) education of visitors while work is in progress; and 2) enjoyment of repaired resources now and in the future.
