Notice of Intent: Documentation and Assessment of Conditions and Treatments Phase 2: The project aims to expand and implement the current Phase 1 research underway at Fort Union (Agreement number UPE-23/P15AC01619) to develop a risk analysis for Fort Union National Monument to better guide future preservation strategies for the site. The CESU partner will expand on current detailed investigations of the standing ruins including the following: 1-identify and locate past conditions and treatments according to archival documentation (written and photographic), 2- generally assess current conditions of the adobe walls, plasters and brick and stone masonry, 3-develop and test a risk analysis on a representative section of the site to develop a rapid site-wide monitoring program to guide overall site preservation and maintenance. This project proposes to study the current condition and past treatments of Fort Union National Monument in real time within the context of changing climatic conditions. The adobe ruins of Fort Union have always existed in an extreme climate including a high frequency of diurnal and seasonal thermal extremes and wet-dry and freeze-thaw cycling.
